AI Policy

Modern Mix is a person choosing songs and writing why, for another person. This page explains where AI fits in, and where it doesn’t.

The short version: we never use what you make with AI unless you’ve explicitly said yes.

“AI” here means all of it: chatbots and other large language models, and also machine learning like recommendation systems (“people who loved this album also loved…”). If Modern Mix grows, recommendations built from people’s lists could be genuinely useful, so rather than promise “never”, we promise to ask.

What you make stays yours

Your lists, mixes, notes, dedications, names and anything you upload:

• Aren’t used to train AI, ours or anyone else’s.
• Aren’t put into AI tools: we don’t run them through chatbots, summarizers or AI moderation.
• Aren’t sold or given to anyone who would do either.

We’ll ask first, every time

If we ever want to use what you make with AI, for any reason, we’ll ask you first:

1. Directly and clearly, in plain words, saying what it’s for. Not in a terms update or a settings page you’d never see.
2. Off unless you say yes. Saying no costs you nothing: every feature keeps working.
3. Only for what you agreed to, and only from when you agreed, never anything you made before.
4. You can change your mind at any time, and we’ll stop.

No AI in mixes or lists

Nothing in a mix or list is generated by AI: no AI-written notes, no AI song picks, no AI cover art. If we ever add an optional AI feature, it will be clearly labeled, off by default, and covered by the rules above.

Keeping AI crawlers out

Mixes and lists are personal pages shared by link. Our robots.txt tells AI training crawlers to stay away from them, and our llms.txt asks AI assistants not to train on them or repeat what’s in them. Not every crawler follows those rules, so as with anything public on the web, only put in a list what you’re comfortable with.

Services we rely on

Modern Mix runs on other companies’ services (Cloudflare for hosting, PostHog for analytics, and the music services for search and playback). Where they offer a setting to keep data out of AI training, we turn it on.

How Modern Mix is built

We’re honest about this: AI coding tools help write the website’s code, and helped draft some of its text. The ideas and decisions are a person’s, and the fonts and art are made by people (see Credits).

Changes

We’ll only change this page to add protections. Anything that would loosen them falls under “We’ll ask first” above.
